This month we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month!

If you weren't aware the roots go back to 1968 when President Lyndon B. Johnson started the observation as Hispanic Heritage Week and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15 and ending on October 15. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988, on the approval of Public Law #100-402. We are reminded of the important contributions and the important presence of Hispanic and Latino Americans to the United States.

Excerpt from President Johnson's Proclamation 3869:

The people of Hispanic descent are the heirs of missionaries, captains, soldiers, and farmers who were motivated by a young spirit of adventure, and a desire to settle freely in a free land. This heritage is ours.
Wishing to pay special tribute to the Hispanic tradition and having in mind the fact that our five Central American neighbors celebrate their Independence Day on the fifteenth of September and the Republic of Mexico on the sixteenth, the Congress, by House Joint Resolution 1299, has requested the President to issue annually a proclamation designating the week including September 15 and 16 as National Hispanic Heritage Week.

Hispanics constitute approximately 21.9% of New Jersey's total population based on 2020 U.S. Census data.
